COFNII Certified Trainer
Certified Trainer is a time-limited, discipline-specific approval status. It is awarded after evidence review and COFNII technical assessment; it is not a membership product that can simply be purchased.

—— ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Requirements before an application can succeed.
COFNII applies proportionate checks to the status claimed. Payment never overrides a missing requirement.

A suitable Level 3 Award in Education and Training, PTLLS or recognised equivalent teaching qualification.

A suitable assessor qualification, normally the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), an appropriate assessor award or recognised predecessor/equivalent.

Relevant vocational or recognised specialist technical qualifications for every discipline claimed.

Current occupational experience, technical CPD and standards knowledge.

An appropriate IQA relationship for assessed provision; IQA qualifications are required where the individual performs that role.

Successful completion of the COFNII evidence review and discipline-specific knowledge and/or practical assessment.
01 Verified teaching and assessor certificates, including awarding organisation, title, level and achievement date.
02 Vocational and specialist technical certificates for every requested discipline.
03 Current CV supported by authenticated occupational and delivery evidence rather than relied upon on its own.
04 Schemes of work, session plans, assessment decisions, learner feedback and observation evidence where requested.
05 CPD, standardisation, manufacturer update and current industry-practice records.
06 Approved-provider affiliation and IQA arrangements where applicable.

Claims must be verifiable.
COFNII checks primary evidence and may contact the issuing or awarding organisation. A CV or attendance certificate is not accepted as vocational proof on its own.

Fees are separated from approval decisions.
Where a fee is quoted, COFNII confirms the scope and price before evidence review or assessment begins.

What can be published
A successful applicant is listed on the Certified Trainer register with their approved provider, qualifications, disciplines, status and renewal date. The listing is not a general endorsement of unassessed subjects or every course delivered by the trainer.
LOGO AND BADGE USE
What the mark means
The Certified Trainer badge is personal, time-limited and discipline-specific. It may not be sold, transferred, altered or used after expiry, suspension or withdrawal. Advertising must not imply that COFNII awarded qualifications issued by City & Guilds, Open Awards, Smart Awards, OTT or another body.

—— RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
01 Maintain current occupational practice and a suitable annual CPD record.
02 Take part in technical standardisation and provider quality-assurance activity.
03 Maintain teaching, assessment, safety and specialist credentials relevant to the approved scope.
04 Declare complaints, sanctions, malpractice findings and material changes in delivery or affiliation.
05 Complete periodic renewal and reassessment where standards, technology or approval scope have changed.
Renewal protects the value of every COFNII mark by checking that the evidence and conduct behind it have not expired.
Can I buy Certified Trainer status?
No. It is an approval decision, not a membership product. Paying an assessment fee never guarantees a pass or a public listing.
Will one assessment approve me for every subject?
No. Approval is discipline-specific. Evidence and assessment for fibre installation do not automatically approve advanced OTDR, CD/PMD, structured cabling or network design.
Do I need CAVA?
Applicants normally need a suitable assessor qualification such as the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, an appropriate assessor award or a recognised equivalent relevant to their assessment activity.
Is a Level 3 Award in Education and Training enough?
No. It supports teaching competence but does not prove assessment competence or occupational competence in fibre optics, structured cabling or specialist testing.

Membership FAQ
Can extensive experience replace certificates?
Experience supports the application, but a CV or claim alone is insufficient. COFNII requires verifiable teaching, assessing and technical evidence and may require practical assessment.
