How to Select a Competent Network Cabling Installer

How to Select a Competent Network Cabling Installer

Choose an installer by checking role-relevant vocational qualifications, practical experience, standards knowledge, test capability, quality procedures, insurance and evidence from comparable projects—not price or unsupported claims alone.

A competent contractor should be able to explain how the network will be designed, installed, tested, documented and handed over. Evidence should relate to the actual work rather than a general company statement.

Questions to ask

  • What qualifications do the people completing the work hold?

  • Which standards will be used?

  • Who is responsible for design and quality assurance?

  • What test equipment and test methods will be used?

  • How will defects and changes be recorded?

  • What documentation and warranty will be supplied?

Evidence to request

  • Role-relevant qualifications.

  • Named competent personnel.

  • Comparable project evidence.

  • Test-equipment capability and calibration.

  • Installation and test specification.

  • Quality assurance plan.

  • Insurance and applicable approvals.

  • Sample test and handover records.

Warning signs

  • Unwillingness to provide qualifications.

  • Standards named without a clear installation specification.

  • Testing offered without defined limits or methods.

  • No named responsibility for quality.

  • No documentation or labelling plan.

  • Price substantially below a realistic compliant delivery cost.

Recommended next step

Prepare a competence and quality schedule before inviting quotations, then assess every bidder against the same evidence requirements.
