Member and Professional Code of Conduct

The minimum professional, ethical, technical and safety behaviour expected from every COFNII member and approved person.

1. Core duty

Members must act lawfully, honestly, safely and within their verified competence. They must protect end clients, network users, learners, colleagues, the public and the reputation of the network-infrastructure industry.

2. Competence and evidence

  • Accept only work, training or assessment activities for which the person or organisation has appropriate competence, resources and authority.

  • Represent qualifications, experience, accreditations, approvals and employment history accurately.

  • Never alter, fabricate, lend, misuse or knowingly accept a false certificate, identity card, test record, calibration record or competence claim.

  • Maintain continuing professional development and keep knowledge of applicable standards, legislation, safety requirements and technology current. 

  • Use competent supervision and escalate work where the limits of competence are reached.

3. Installation, testing and records

  • Follow the agreed specification, applicable legislation, relevant standards and manufacturers’ instructions.

  • Use suitable, maintained and calibrated test equipment where measurement validity depends on calibration.

  • Record results accurately and do not conceal failures, limitations, deviations or incomplete work.

  • Protect traceability for materials, test files, labels, drawings, changes and handover documentation.

  • Report significant safety, quality or performance concerns through the appropriate project and contractual channels.

4. Safety, equality and respect

  • Comply with applicable health and safety law, site rules, risk controls and authorisations.

  • Do not discriminate, harass, bully, victimise or retaliate against another person.

  • Make reasonable adjustments where required and treat learners, workers, clients and suppliers fairly.

  • Protect confidential, commercially sensitive and personal information. 

  • Avoid bribery, corruption, secret commissions and improper inducements.

5. Conflicts and public statements

Actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest must be declared promptly. Members must distinguish personal views from authorised COFNII statements and must not imply COFNII endorsement beyond their current published status.

6. Reporting and enforcement

A member must cooperate reasonably with a proportionate COFNII investigation. Retaliation against a person who raises a genuine concern in good faith is prohibited. Breach may result in advice, corrective action, conditions, suspension, removal of approval or termination of membership, subject to fair procedure and appeal.
